Interpersonal Communication Theory is a broad category that various theories and models designed to explain and understand the dynamics of communication between individuals in personal relationshipsTheory focuses on the initial stages of interpersonal interactions when individuals are getting to know each other. It posits that in the early stages of a relationship, people seek to reduce uncertainty about the other person to increase predictability and comfort.

The theory that stood out to me was Social Penetration Theory, often referred to as the "Onion Theory," because it uses the metaphor of peeling away layers of an onion to describe how interpersonal relationships develop and become more intimate over time. It's a perfect way to describe how any type of relationship starts and expands, as well describe how someone is how theres different layers to all of us depending on how comfortable or decide to show anyone.

Social Penetration Theory emphasizes two dimensions of self-disclosure.The range of topics discussed, while depth relates to the level of intimacy or personal significance attached to those topics. Such as someones thoughts, feelings, and actions. An example of this would be when someone first starts dating they have small talk and are shy vs when they dated for months personal topics start appearing, childhood experiences and self disclosure.

This is my best friend and I, this is an example of the social penetration theory. My best friend and I are also cousins, but we were never close till the age of 12 we started off shy and uncomfortable. Questions as whats your favorite toy , color , food , thing to do turned into sharing family secrets, being weird with each other , very comfortable with each other and becoming sisters. This is an example of the onion theory as we kept peeling layers we grew closer to each other. You go through so many layers/ stages when developing any type of relationship as you guys grow older and stay together longer things start changing in a positive way as you peel your layers.

  1. I thought the onion theory was great as well! I like that it stood out to you! I like how you related it to your cousin and the deep connection you grew as you peeled away the layers. Maybe explain a little bit more why the theory interests you:) I think this is great!
